The Department of French in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Teaching Stream appointment in French as a Second Language at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream effective July 1st, 2018.


We seek candidates whose teaching and research expertise is in French as a Second Language with extensive knowledge of new technologies used in French Language instruction. Experience with teaching core French language skills for a variety of academic and professional purposes (e.g., business, law, health) and/or with action-oriented approaches to second language teaching and learning will be an asset. The successful candidate will be involved in teaching courses at the undergraduate level. Graduate level teaching may occur depending on departmental needs. In addition to the above, the position includes coordinating and developing new French language courses, supervising teaching assistants as well as developing curricular materials and teaching tools.


The successful candidate must have a PhD in any field of French studies (literature, pedagogy, didactics, linguistics or applied linguistics) by the start date of the appointment. S/he must demonstrate evidence of extensive as well as outstanding FSL teaching experience and program development at the university level.


Evidence of excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to exceptional pedagogical practices will be illustrated through outstanding teaching evaluations, strong letters of reference from referees endorsing excellent teaching and commitment to teaching innovation, and the teaching dossier and teaching statement submitted as part of the application. Candidates must have native or near-native French proficiency and be able to work effectively in English. 


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

1)           A curriculum vitae;


2)           A cover letter of no more than two single-spaced pages which includes a description of future pedagogic projects;


3)           A teaching dossier with a detailed statement outlining teaching philosophy, a list of courses taught, course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a proposal for two courses (both a third-year course for students in the Department’s Minor in French as a Second Language and an advanced course for students in the Major in French Language Learning);


4)           One writing sample of no more than 30pp (for example, an article, conference paper or excerpt drawn from a dissertation chapter);


5)           Three letters of reference (signed and on letterhead), at least two of which must speak directly to teaching ability including familiarity with methods and theories of second language teaching and learning, should be sent directly by the referee under separate cover by the October 16th, 2017 deadline, preferably in PDF format, to Marjorie Rolando at (with “French FSL Position” and the applicant’s name in the subject line).
